Welcome to PIX-ART

Welcome to the website of PIX-ART (Performative Investigations into eXtended and Augmented Reality Technologies).

PIX-ART explores how extended reality (XR) technologies – including virtual, augmented and mixed reality – are changing theatre, performance and storytelling.

These technologies allow audiences to enter virtual worlds, interact with performers and experience stories in new ways. They also raise important creative questions: How does performance change when physical and digital spaces overlap? What kinds of choices can audiences make? How can artists design meaningful experiences using these technologies?

PIX-ART brings together researchers and practitioners from drama, performance, design and computer science. Through creative experiments, performances and public exhibitions, we investigate how XR can be used to make, understand and teach performance.

Our research focuses on four main areas:

  • identifying and describing different forms of XR performance
  • exploring how XR changes the relationship between artists and audiences
  • developing new methods for creating and teaching XR performance
  • building a practical and theoretical framework for this emerging art form

Ultimately, PIX-ART aims to give artists, audiences, researchers and educators a clearer language for understanding and creating performance in extended reality.
